The ATR 72 is derived from the ATR 42 with a 4.5 m stretched fuselage. The two aircraft feature a high degree of commonality: the same cross section, the same cockpit for cross-crew qualification. 1. Military.

The Italian Air Force has ordered four more sophisticated “ATR 72 ASW” machines. The ATR 72 ASWs are fitted with the “Airborne Tactical Observation & Sensor (ATOS)” system, built by Finmeccia SELEX Galileo, with the suite including Ferranti Seaspray radar, an electro-optic sensor turret, magnetic anomaly detector sensor. Military communications and datalink systems, as well as defensive countermeasures, were also be fitted. They could carry two depth charges; four light torpedoes or two heavy torpedoes; or two Exocet antiship missiles. Initial deliveries were in 2012, with the machines operated by mixed air force and navy crews. Six more ATR 72 ASWs, along with two ATR 72 military utility machines, were ordered by the Turkish Navy, with initial deliveries in 2013.

2. Cargo.

ATR 72-200 cargo with LCD Modules, immensely facilitates the loading of oversize goods or containers. Associated to a complete stripping of standard furnishings and addition of specific cargo equipment (9g stop net, floor reinforcement, class E cabin, light or structural linings, window plugs), it provides operators with a flexible, multipurpose cargo platform for transportation of ULD (88”x62” / 88”x108”), pallets, bulk freight or both, the gross usable volume being up to 75.5m3 for the ATR 72 model.
