The three words which describe ATR 72-200 are: cost-effectiveness, flexibility, versatility.

Cost-effectiveness: Easy maintenance. Operating costs 45% less than regional jets. Over a distance of less than 500 km, the fuel consumption per passenger of the ATR is 15% less than that of a car, and 60% less than that of an equivalent-sized jet plane. Consequently, in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, an ATR plane produces up to 60% Less than a jet plane.

Flexibility and versatility: Requires remarkably short runways (less than 1,000 m/3,280 ft) providing the unique flexibility to serve airports with shorter runways. 6° Steep slope approach (ATR approved for operations in LCY). Unpaved runways certification (laterite, soil, gravel, grass). Narrow runways operations, down to 14 m/46 ft width. 4.5% runway max slope allowed. 120 min ETOPS. –45°C certification.

A State-of-the-art Technology: New avionics suite compliant with future CNS/ATM systems. Better performance and higher payload. The cabin designed for passenger comfort.

ATR aircraft offers the lowest greenhouse gas emissions, best technical solutions, and unique commonality while remaining the most cost efficient technology.
The best solution for short haul flights.  Latest Generation Glass Cockpit designed for economics, 40% less on fuel bills.

Variants:

1. Military.

The Italian Air Force has ordered four more sophisticated “ATR 72 ASW” machines. The ATR 72 ASWs are fitted with the “Airborne Tactical Observation & Sensor (ATOS)” system, built by Finmeccia SELEX Galileo, with the suite including Ferranti Seaspray radar, an electro-optic sensor turret, magnetic anomaly detector sensor. Military communications and datalink systems, as well as defensive countermeasures, were also be fitted. They could carry two depth charges; four light torpedoes or two heavy torpedoes; or two Exocet antiship missiles. Initial deliveries were in 2012, with the machines operated by mixed air force and navy crews. Six more ATR 72 ASWs, along with two ATR 72 military utility machines, were ordered by the Turkish Navy, with initial deliveries in 2013.

2. Cargo.

  • Cargo LCD (Large Cargo Door – (294cm x 180cm))

ATR 72-200 cargo with LCD Modules, immensely facilitates the loading of oversize goods or containers. Associated to a complete stripping of standard furnishings and addition of specific cargo equipment (9g stop net, floor reinforcement, class E cabin, light or structural linings, window plugs), it provides operators with a flexible, multipurpose cargo platform for transportation of ULD (88”x62” / 88”x108”), pallets, bulk freight or both, the gross usable volume being up to 75.5m3 for the ATR 72 model.

Large Cargo Door is:

Hydraulically actuated
Equipped with view ports for locked latches verification
An auxiliary crew door (24” x 48”) is incorporated
Max door opening: 110°
Door tip distance from ground: 4.041m (13.25 ft)
Door sill height: 1.050m (3.44 ft)

  • Cargo BFC (Bulk Freighter Converted Cargo Doors – 129cm x 157cm))

Existing 1.295 x 1.575m (51” x 62”) cargo door provides adequate accessibility for door provides adequate accessibility for bulk freight and dedicated containers loading. Adapted fuselage lining combined with transverse nets installation (adjustable) adds flexibility to loading arrangements and optimize volume utilization.
